About

Welcome!

I am Carolyn Pinnock Jackson, a Jamaican woman who studied Paediatric Surgery. I have the honour of being one of the first two women to graduate with a surgical degree from the University of the West Indies.

*Shout Out to Dr. Lisa Johnson, General Surgeon in Belize!*

The journey I make since acquiring that coveted degree has been a fascinating blend of personal and professional encounters for which I am forever grateful . I have blessed with family, friends, colleagues, associates, employees and patient-families that have enriched my life beyond my wildest dreams. My patients bring me joy EVERY day.

I believe in God. I believe in LOVE. I believe we were born to help each other. I believe nothing happens by accident. These are the principles that guide me. As I continue down this path, I use this blog to share some of my concerns, thoughts and joys.

Thanks for following me!! Let’s get to know each other better.

  2. Hi, as a Cape student who wants to become a Pediatric Surgeon, I was wondering if I would have to pursued MBBS then a post graduate degree in pediatric surgery only or do I have to study something else after.

    • Hi Esther,

Most systems require an MBBS /MD before any specialisation. At UWI the first part of the specialist training process is general – rotating though various surgical specialties for 2 years before focusing in on Paediatric Surgery (3 years). Some systems require that you complete general surgery training and then do a (2 year) fellowship in Paediatric Surgery.

I wish you all the best in your pursuits. Be sure to embrace the journey as much as the hope of the destination; paediatric surgery is a very satisfying and rewarding field.
